A nova is a cataclysmic nuclear explosion occurring on the surface of a white dwarf star in a binary star system. This explosive event leads to a sudden and dramatic increase in brightness, which can be observed from Earth. Unlike a supernova, a nova does not result in the destruction of the star but rather a temporary, yet significant, increase in luminosity.
