The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) is a large-scale physics experiment and observatory designed to detect gravitational waves. These are ripples in spacetime caused by some of the most violent and energetic processes in the Universe, such as the merging of black holes or neutron stars.
