Gravitational waves are ripples in the fabric of spacetime caused by some of the most violent and energetic processes in the Universe. These waves were first predicted by Albert Einstein in 1916 on the basis of his General Theory of Relativity. Einstein proposed that accelerating masses could generate distortions in spacetime that would propagate outward at the speed of light.
